Wood, especially when dried, has a unique organic cellular structure made up of countless tiny air pockets.
This structure provides excellent insulation. By its very nature, a wooden house has a low thermal transmittance—known as the U-value.
By combining solid wood with additional ecological wood fiber insulation, we harness the advantages of all components. This allows us to achieve maximum energy efficiency with our preHAUS wooden walls.
The high proportion of cellulose and boron insulation used in the walls of our preHAUS homes not only provides excellent thermal insulation and slower heat loss in winter, but also ensures a cooling effect during hot summer months.
The low thermal transmittance (U-value) resulting from the combination of wood and natural insulation materials in our construction methods minimizes heat gain from the outside.
This means that preHAUS homes require minimal energy for heating and cooling—while delivering a high level of living comfort all year round.
One cubic meter of wood stores approximately one ton of CO₂.
This makes wooden buildings a significant contributor to the reduction of greenhouse gases. For an average-sized preHAUS wooden house of 150 m², around 40–50 cubic meters of timber are used—meaning approximately 40–50 tons of CO₂ are stored within the structure.

In fact, our wooden construction method offers certain advantages over conventional methods. When exposed to fire, the outer surface of the wood begins to char, creating a protective layer that reduces oxygen supply. This slows down combustion and ensures that the load-bearing core of the structure remains unaffected by fire for a longer period.

This is because wood has the ability to absorb moisture from the air and release it when needed. Kiln-dried to 18% or below, the wood used can effectively regulate indoor humidity by absorbing excess moisture. As a result, it contributes to a healthier indoor climate.
For example, during dry summer months, the wood gradually releases stored moisture into the air—naturally maintaining balanced humidity levels inside the home.
Before being used in our homes, wood undergoes a long and complex drying process.
In the final stage of technical drying, thermal treatment alters the protein structure of the wood, making it resistant to mold and pests. Additionally, the natural resins and essential oils within the wood have antibacterial properties.
An added benefit is the light, pleasant scent of wood present in every home, which contributes to a calming and comfortable atmosphere.

Wood, our primary building material, is free from toxic or harmful substances. It has antibacterial properties that help repel germs, and its ability to regulate humidity naturally helps prevent mold caused by excess moisture.
Additionally, wood is antistatic—meaning it doesn’t attract dust, pollen, or household allergens, making it easier to keep the environment clean. By naturally balancing indoor humidity, it also creates conditions that prevent the survival of dust mites, which typically thrive in humidity levels above 70%.
Another factor that influences indoor climate is noise pollution.
Whether it’s from a busy street, neighboring rooms, bathrooms, or other sources, unwanted noise has a constant and often underestimated impact on our well-being. The solution, however, is quite simple—material choice plays a crucial role in sound insulation at home.
Materials with high density are less prone to resonance, making them ideal for effective soundproofing. By working extensively with solid wood and selecting the right materials—both inside and outside the walls—along with proper thickness and sound absorption ratings, we ensure optimal acoustic insulation.
Thanks to the sophisticated combination of solid wood and Cellubor insulation, preHAUS homes achieve superior thermal performance, with a low heat transfer coefficient of 0.16 W/m²K.
This results in significantly longer cooling times and better insulation than most conventional construction methods. It means that the thermal indoor climate of a preHAUS home is naturally regulated—providing comfort in every season.
Wood naturally provides a certain level of protection against electromagnetic radiation.
Thanks to its fibrous structure, which has dispersing and blocking properties, a wooden home can significantly reduce radiation levels inside.
Research conducted by the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich—published by the Bavarian State Office for Environmental Protection (LfU)—showed that, unlike many other building materials, solid wood can block up to 99.9% of high-frequency radiation.
The wood used in your preHAUS prefabricated home is sourced from sustainably managed forests, making a genuine contribution to ecological balance and climate protection.
PEFC and other certification systems ensure that the wood is harvested without harming the environment.

This production method also ensures high material and energy efficiency, meaning we act not only economically, but also ecologically responsibly.
We place great importance on slow and gentle drying of wood,
as this is the only way to achieve the highest material quality. Freshly cut timber initially contains between 60% and 90% moisture. It is first air-dried naturally over the course of about a year, until its moisture content drops to around 18–20%.
For final processing, the wood then undergoes technical drying, where it is exposed to temperatures around 80°C. This reduces the moisture content to approximately 14%, which closely matches the equilibrium moisture content the wood will have once used in the building.
At this stage, the altered protein structure of the wood offers protection against mold and pests. Additionally, this process virtually eliminates the risk of future deformation.
